Network Marketing: The Benefits and Disadvantages

Network Marketing: The Benefits and Disadvantages

Everyone has been exposed to what's either called Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) or Network Marketing at one time or another. You likely have had friends or family ask you if you wanted to join an opportunity they were selling.
The opposing views on this form of marketing are fascinating. Some people love it. These are usually the successful marketers who have discovered the real brilliance behind the model. In fact, this group even includes top celebrity authors/millionaires who not only advocate MLM, but they are actually doing it. They include:

Robert Allen, author of Multiple Streams of Income
Mark Victor Hansen, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul
Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad
Warren Buffet, billionaire investor (owner of Pampered Chef network marketing)

But there are even more people who view MLM negatively, either because they tried it and failed, or because they know someone who has and therefore they assume it's bad.

One reason it gets a bad reputation is due to its pyramid shape. We've all heard stories about illegal pyramid schemes that only make those people at the top of the pyramid rich. There have been some disreputable MLM companies who set up their businesses as illegal scams, but the majority of MLM opportunities are just that, real opportunities.

The fact that MLM is in a pyramid shape is not what we should take issue with. The pyramid itself is a very sound structure. In fact, every corporation is set up as a pyramid structure. You have the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) at the top followed by the President, Vice President, Middle Management, and so on. Of course the CEO makes the most money and everyone below him or her makes less.

The compensation plan for sales people in most corporations is set up in a similar way as the compensation plan in an MLM company. The sales people get a commission for everything they sell, and everyone above them; the sales managers, sales directors, VPs, President, and CEO get paid overrides or bonuses based on how much the sales people sell.

But there is an inherit weakness in the structure of typical corporation that you won't find in the structure of a good MLM opportunity. In a corporation, the CEO makes money by leveraging the time of other people. As we discussed earlier, leveraging your time and money are the only ways to truly get wealthy since there are only so many hours you can work in a day.

The weakness in the corporate pyramid structure is that the sales people have no way of leveraging their time. They can't hire people under them and get a portion of what these people sell as the CEO can. The only way the sales people can make more money is to work harder. Or the sales person can leave and start a competing business and hire his or her own sales people.

This is often what real estate agents do. They become brokers and start their own agencies.  So the broker who initially trained the agent loses a top sales person and the revenue he or she brought in. But even worse, the broker also gained a competitor that he or she trained!

With MLM you want to train the people under you to start their own agencies so to speak. You want them to bring more people in to sell the products or service. Of course, you don't get as much commission as your trained agent does from everything he or she sells, or as you would as if you brought people in directly, but you're leveraging your time.

And the people you bring in under you actually can make more money than you if they develop a larger organization under them. That's one of the motivating factors of the MLM compensation plan. Since I only get a small percentage of the profits from the people under me, anyone who signs up more people than I do can actually make more than me. But as a consequence, I don't have to work as hard and money still comes in. My time becomes highly leveraged.

In an MLM opportunity, the people you bring in under you are essentially your employees. You leverage your time every time you bring in someone new. Even better, in the best MLM opportunities you also get paid when the people you bring in bring in people of their own. You essentially become the CEO of the organization under you.  And the people under you become the CEO of their organization and so on.

That's one of the great things about the MLM employees underneath you. They aren't like regular employees. Regular employees have no ownership in the business they work for. So they're less motivated to work as hard as they can.

Since everyone in an MLM opportunity can grow their own organization under them, people have ownership and are more motivated to work harder.

So why then do so many people fail in MLM It's not the MLM business model that's the problem. Unfortunately, it is the people it attracts.

MLM is like owning a micro-franchise without having to pay a huge franchising fee. Its very low cost of entry with the potential for large income draws a lot of people who have high expectations of making money with little work. But it does require work.

So the things that make MLM attractive tend to draw people who are either not qualified or not prepared to become business owners. It attracts people who:

-        who have no experience in operating their own business
-        who have no money for marketing
-        have no experience in selling
-        have unrealistic expectations on how long it takes build a business
-        are not willing to put effort into getting trained

Don't become discouraged if you see yourself in the first three issues on the list. There's a first time for everything and there are few business opportunities like MLM that allow someone with absolutely no experience and little money to get started. If you are willing to put forth the effort to get yourself trained and give your business time to grow, then MLM is a great first business.

MLM is simply the best hope for those without business experience to actually start a business. Not everyone is doing it to build a $30,000 a month income. For instance, for a divorced woman with two kids, earning an extra $500 a month can have a huge impact on the way they live.

MLM is a real business and if you want to have success at it, you'll need to do all the same things as you would do in any business. That means learning how to advertise and sell, to manage money, to provide support, and everything else you have to do in any business.

Regardless of the business type, a large percentage fail because they simply don't do what needs to be done. MLM is really no different than most other business opportunities in terms of failure rate of new participants.

Want evidence? Just talk to the broker at any real estate agency. He or she will tell you that most of the real estate sold is done by a fraction of the licensed agents in the city. The same would be true of life insurance agents, car sales people, mortgage loan officers, or just about any direct contact sales field.

If you're interested in an MLM, then be realistic about your current capabilities and how much work you?ll have to apply to improve yourself.  If you're serious about building a business you must be reading and learning about business fundamentals. If you are serious about MLM then you need to learn strategies for networking and business development. You must act like a small business owner.

One thing is for sure, you will fail at 100% of the things you don't try. You can learn to succeed at anything if you are willing to try and put in the continuous effort. Persistence is one of the keys to success in any business opportunity you choose.

An Old Multiply Post...

By Kristina Godinez
Ran across this blog post from my multiply account...

(Magka abs jud akong aping ani)

No wonder I love smileys so much.

If you'd like to play this game, scroll down to the bottom and work your way up to the top.

That's the law of nature. And there's a reason for that.

*   *   *

10,080 Minutes, 168 Hours, Seven Days, One Week

I hope that tomorrow and every single day will be just as productive as the past 7 days. The freedom that comes with His love is way better than any of my past guilty pleasures that I can’t help but smile all day and all night. Magka-abs na jud akong aping ani. The good kind of abs. :)

Today I learned the value of temperance and humility. And that the enemy works double time the moment we accept Jesus Christ into our lives. A fierce struggle ensues. But I also witnessed the truth behind the words, “God has already won our battles for us.” He has, and He always will.

On Sunday, I basked in His glory in the Blessed Sacrament, which was how I came to fully understand the true meaning of the phrase “God is love.”

On Saturday I learned the value of letting go and total surrender. I also learned that in order to let go, I must confront my personal darkness, stare it in the face and say, “you shall not win!”

On Friday I said I would never need someone again, not if I could help it. And then I surrendered to the power of music, my first love, even as a child. A few hours later I saw the True Reason for the music in my heart and soul.

On Thursday I put on a brave face and gave the world a glimpse of the real me and the reason why I hide behind walls. And then courage fled so I retreated and crouched behind those walls once more.

On Wednesday I realized what we are all here for. No man or woman is an island. I saw it reflected in other people’s eyes as they reached out for comfort.

On Tuesday I realized I feared love because of the hurt that comes with it. Self-preservation. That is why I stayed in an Alcatraz of my own making for decades.

SEVENTEEN RULES FOR A BETTER WAY TO LIVE!

By Vir Chicano
SEVENTEEN RULES FOR A BETTER WAY TO LIVE! Copyright © Og Mandino, from his book, "A Better Way To Live" Rule One... for a Better Way to Live: Count your blessings. Once you realize how valuable you are and how much you have going for you, the smiles will return, the sun will break out, the music will play, and you will finally be able to move forward the life that God intended for you... with grace, strength, courage, and confidence. Rule Two... for a Better Way to Live: Today, and every day, deliver more than you are getting paid to do. The victory of success will be half won when you learn the secret of putting out more than is expected in all that you do. Make yourself so valuable in your work that eventually you will become indispensable. Exercise your privilege to go the extra mile, and enjoy all the rewards you receive. You deserve them! Rule Three... for a Better Way to Live: Whenever you make a mistake or get knocked down by life, don't look back at it too long. Mistakes are life's way of teaching you. Your capacity for occasional blunders is inseparable from your capacity to reach your goals. No one wins them all, and your failures, when they happen, are just part of your growth. Shake off your blunders. How will you know your limits without an occasional failure? Never quit. Your turn will come. Rule Four... for a Better Way to Live: Always reward your long hours of labor and toil in the very best way, surrounded by your family. Nurture their love carefully, remembering that your children need models, not critics, and your own progress will hasten when you constantly strive to present your best side to your children. And even if you have failed at all else in the eyes of the world, if you have a loving family, you are a success. Rule Five... for a Better Way to Live: Build this day on a foundation of pleasant thoughts. Never fret at any imperfections that you fear may impede your progress. Remind yourself, as often as necessary, that you are a creature of God and have the power to achieve any dream by lifting up your thoughts. You can fly when you decide that you can. Never consider yourself defeat again. Let the vision in your heart be in your life's blueprint. Smile! Rule Six... for a Better Way to Live: Let your actions always speak for you, but be forever on guard against the terrible traps of false pride and conceit that can halt your progress. The next time you are tempted to boast, just place your fist in a full pail of water, and when you remove it, the hole remaining will give you a correct measure of your importance. Rule Seven... for a Better Way to Live: Each day is a special gift from God, and while life may not always be fair, you must never allow the pains, hurdles, and handicaps of the moment to poison your attitude and plans for yourself and your future. You can never win when you wear the ugly cloak of self-pity, and the sour sound of whining will certainly frighten away any opportunity for success. Never again. There is a better way. Rule Eight... for a Better Way to Live: Never again clutter your days or nights with so many menial and unimportant things that you have no time to accept a real challenge when it comes along. This applies to play as well as work. A day merely survived is no cause for celebration. You are not here to fritter away your precious hours when you have the ability to accomplish so much by making a slight change in your routine. No more busy work. No more hiding from success. Leave time, leave space, to grow. Now. Now! Not tomorrow! Rule Nine... for a Better Way to Live: Live this day as if it will be your last. Remember that you will only find "tomorrow" on the calendars of fools. Forget yesterday's defeats and ignore the problems of tomorrow. This is it. Doomsday. All you have. Make it the best day of your year. The saddest words you can ever utter are, "If I had my life to live over again..."Take the baton, now. Run with it! This is your day! Rule Ten... for a Better Way to Live: Beginning today, treat everyone you meet, friend or foe, loved one or stranger, as if they were going to be dead at midnight. Extend to each person, no matter how trivial the contact, all the care and kindness and understanding and love that you can muster, and do it with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again. Rule Eleven... for a Better Way to Live: Laugh at yourself and at life. Not in the spirit of derision or whining self-pity, but as a remedy, a miracle drug, that will ease your pain, cure your depression, and help you to put in perspective that seemingly terrible defeat and worry with laughter at your predicaments, thus freeing your mind to think clearly toward the solution that is certain to come. Never take yourself too seriously. Rule Twelve... for a Better Way to Live: Never neglect the little things. Never skimp on that extra effort, that additional few minutes, that soft word of praise or thanks, that delivery of the very best that you can do. It does not matter what others think, it is of prime importance, however, what you think about you. You can never do your best, which should always be your trademark, if you are cutting corners and shirking responsibilities. You are special. Act it. Never neglect the little things. Rule Thirteen... for a Better Way to Live: Welcome every morning with a smile. Look on the new day as another special gift from your Creator, another golden opportunity to complete what you were unable to finish yesterday. Be a self-starter. Let your first hour set the theme of success and positive action that is certain to echo through your entire day. Today will never happen again. Don't waste it with a false start or no start at all. You were not born to fail. Rule Fourteen... for a Better Way to Live: You will achieve grand dream, a day at a time, so set goals for each day -- not long and difficult projects, but chores that will take you, step by step, toward your rainbow. Write them down, if you must, but limit your list so that you won't have to drag today's undone matters into tomorrow. Remember that you cannot build your pyramid in twenty-four hours. Be patient. Never allow your day to become so cluttered that you neglect your most important goal -- to do the best you can, enjoy this day, and rest satisfied with what you have accomplished. Rule Fifteen... for a Better Way to Live: Never allow anyone to rain on your parade and thus cast a pall of gloom and defeat on the entire day. Remember that no talent, no self-denial, no brains, no character, are required to set up in the fault-finding business. Nothing external can have any power over you unless you permit it. Your time is too precious to be sacrificed in wasted days combating the menial forces of hate, jealously, and envy. Guard your fragile life carefully. Only God can shape a flower, but any foolish child can pull it to pieces. Rule Sixteen... for a Better Way to Live: Search for the seed of good in every adversity. Master that principle and you will own a precious shield that will guard you well through all the darkest valley you must traverse. Stars may be seen from the bottom of a deep well, when they cannot be discerned from the mountaintop. So will you learn things in adversity that you would never have discovered without trouble. There is always a seed of good. Find it and prosper. Rule Seventeen... for a Better Way to Live: Realize that true happiness lies within you. Waste no time and effort searching for peace and contentment and joy in the world outside. Remember that there is no happiness in having or in getting, but only in giving. Reach out. Share. Smile. Hug. Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself.

Honoring the Saints, Relics, and Images

By Vir Chicano
Honoring the Saints, Relics, and Images 214. Does the first commandment forbid us to honor the saints in heaven? The first commandment does not forbid us to honor the saints in heaven, provided we do not give them the honor that belongs to God alone. For, behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. (Luke 1:48) 215. Why do we honor the saints in heaven? We honor the saints in heaven because they practiced great virtue when they were on earth, and because in honoring those who are the chosen friends of God we honor God Himself. 216. How can we honor the saints? We can honor the saints: first, by imitating their holy lives; second, by praying to them; third, by showing respect to their relics and images. Brethren, be imitators of me, and mark those who walk after the pattern you have in us. (Philippians 3:17) 217. When we pray to the saints what do we ask them to do? When we pray to the saints we ask them to offer their prayers to God for us. 218. How do we know that the saints will pray for us? We know that the saints will pray for us because they are with God and have great love for us. 219. Why do we honor relics? We honor relics because they are the bodies of the saints or objects connected with the saints or with Our Lord. 220. When does the first commandment forbid the making or the use of statues and pictures? The first commandment forbids the making or the use of statues and pictures only when they promote false worship. Thou shalt not have strange Gods before me. Thou shalt not make to thyself a graven thing, nor the likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, nor of those things that are in the waters under the earth. (Exodus 20:3-4) 221. Is it right to show respect to the statues and pictures of Christ and of the saints? It is right to show respect to the statues and pictures of Christ and of the saints, just as it is right to show respect to the images of those whom we honor or love on earth. 222. Do we honor Christ and the saints when we pray before the crucifix, relics, and sacred images? We honor Christ and the saints when we pray before the crucifix, relics, and sacred images because we honor the persons they represent; we adore Christ and venerate the saints. 223. Do we pray to the crucifix or to the images and relics of the saints? We do not pray to the crucifix or to the images and relics of the saints, but to the persons they represent.

WATERLOO

By Lei-Ann Jessica Cabulay

WATERLOO

“Embrace your weakness and make it your strength.”

That’s what my Math teacher told me when I said, “I hate your subject Ma’am. I hate Math!”

Math period is just like a night time for me. It marks the beginning of my passiveness and sleepy mind. Accompanied by this is the most horrible prayer in the world---“Lord, sana po hindi ako pasagutin ni Sir/ Ma’am sa board”. But oftentimes God doesn’t grant this prayer. I don’t know why.

Since my elementary years, I have never learned to love this subject which had always been with me up to now. Neither do I have any interest in applying its principles and formulas to other fields of studies.       Math makes me dizzy. It’s just like riding on a roller coaster for 10 times in just one and a half hour!

When I was in High School, I used to be irritated by those long formulas and toxic problems that often give me low scores both in quizzes and periodic examinations.  I have a high self esteem so I never blamed myself for such scores. Instead, I blamed the genius proponent of such formula, principle or law. I hated them for making Math so complicated! At this juncture , I would like to extend my apologies belatedly to all the Math wizards especially to Sir Rene Descartes.

It is not surprising that when I entered college, I had to take up (whether I like it or not) Math Plus (it's like taking up High School Mathematics in just a whole semester). Was it easy? But of course! It’s as easy as climbing the coconut tree. At the end of the first semester, I got 2.25. (Whew!) Then here comes second semester…College Algebra! As my grade in Theology soared, in opposite, my grade in Algebra agonized! It is then I realized, taking Algebra is much like eating fried lizards, frogs and adobong sawa!

I never desired to be weak in Math. Who, by the way, would like to get scores in Math as low as what a chick can fly,? or let's say, answering a bloody Geometry prolem on the board for a long time, that even the a turtle would protest because you're grabbing its title? I bet nobody would like that. (Kill my neighbor's pig now if I'm wrong!)

Honestly, there are also times I tried and even forced myself to be good in Math and other fields of studies involving calculations. I even tried self reviews and practices. I tried to push beyond the limit. But I can’t really be as good as others because I am simply me. Math is my waterloo.

But if there is one thing I am most proud of, it is I never cheated during quizzes and examinations. I earned my grade in an honorable way.

I may not be blessed with Mathematical and logical ability. I may not know well the Pythagorean Theorem… I may not be able to solve complicated algebraic expressions… I may have not succeeded in defeating my weakness… but somehow I learned to accept it through the comfort that, what is important is becoming who God wants me to be.

I came to realize that I am just like anybody else. I am just like the street man who has strong fighting spirit. I am just like Barack Obama who has his own weakness. I am just like you, human, a unique creation of God.

Never Too Late

By JMJ Family

At 36, and with 4 young kids, I'm learning a new skill ... ice skating.

Really.  Took me that long.

Well, I couldn't have learned it in the Philippines as a young adult coz it was costly. I couldn't have learned it in Canada as a wife coz I was busy having babies one after another. And I couldn't have learned it here in US as a visitor coz it's not within the budget.

But then again, when you're into the LOA (Law of Attraction), there's really no excuse for not doing the things you would like to do and try even for the first time. There is really no excuse for not dreaming anymore.

Try reading "The Secret to Attracting Money" by Dr. Joe Vitale, "Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life" by Dr. Wayne Dyer or "The Power of Now" by Echart Tolle, or reading "Ask And It Is Given" by Abraham-Esther Hicks, or watching "The Secret", "The Shift", "You Can Heal Your Life" or "There's a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem", and see if they will not compel you to get out of your comfort zone and try something new.

So, I decided that our budget won't hinder me from checking off this item on my Bucket List. I scouted for Black Friday deals on Ice Skates. I figured it would be best to just buy our own skates rather than rent everytime we wanna practice. Bryant Park has "The Pond" and it offers free admission but the rental is $12, multiply that by 3 (well, I couldn't leave out my hubby and daughter while I go fulfilling my dream, could I? I mean, they haven't tried Ice skating, too, you know)

And let me tell you, once you make your decision, the Universe will just take over.

First, it led me to Timeoutkids NY where I read that City Ice Pavillion was gonna have its Grand Opening on Nov. 21. There was gonna be a party with FREE skating, rentals and refreshments. FREE? How cool is that?

Then, on the day itself, while we were looking for the venue, guess what we found?

A Goodwill Outlet! You betcha, I rushed to the skates section immediately. And as if by some miracle, all our sizes were available. No kidding. I got mine brand new, by the way, but heck if I care if it was overly-used? I'm just saying, I got lucky it was brand new. Take a look (this was taken after I've used it a couple of times):

I'd say it's pretty chic for $2 bucks, don't you think? What can I say? The universe can be so grand.
