Culinary pleasure and leisurely family meals make a difference:

By Arman Seguis

There may be something in the Mediterranean lifestyle that helps prevent depression, and may even transcend nutrients. To be sure, nutrients matter. The latest study of more than 10,000 Spaniards, found that those who most closely adhere to their traditional Mediterranean diet have a 30 percent lower risk of developing depression, compared to those who don’t follow the diet. While the researchers emphasize that the study doesn’t show cause and effect, they point out that:

  • The abundance of antioxidant-rich and anti-inflammatory compounds in fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and other components help protect the endothelium, the lining of blood vessels. A healthy endothelium is associated not only with less heart disease but also possibly with less depression.
  • Olive oil may improve the body’s ability to use serotonin, the brain transmitter that is often found to be low in depression, and which antidepressants such as Prozac boost.
  • Omega 3-fatty acids found in seafood may improve the function of nerve cells.
  • Fruits, nuts and legumes (such as beans) were independently protective against depression in the study.

But the Mediterranean diet goes beyond food. The origin of the word “diet” comes from the Greek word “diaita,” which really means the manner in which you live your life, not just what you put in your mouth. It includes how you grow, buy and prepare your food, who you prepare it for, and if you and your family make and eat meals together.

“I can think of two factors that might play a role in the reduced incidence of depression in people who eat the Mediterranean way,” says one author about Mediterranean diet.

Her first thought is culinary pleasure. “They enjoy wonderful flavors as they eat seasonal vegetables and fruits that are tasty, colorful and varied, compared to the dull ‘meat and potatoes’ Western way of eating.”

Her second is about family meals. “Traditionally, in the Mediterranean countries, family and friends enjoy their meals leisurely sharing meze [small plates] and main courses around the table with a glass of wine or two. Also, as most Mediterranean dishes are made from scratch, the preparation of food is an added satisfaction that is very often shared among family members.”

So while we celebrate the nutritious balance of foods in the Mediterranean Diet, let’s remember its social and cultural lessons as well. Making meals together and sharing them with friends and family, while not a proven antidote to depression, may also play a role in the pursuit of happiness.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL HAVE A HAPPY DIET.

God's 911

By Arman Seguis
Yesterday i was driving from my house at Las Piñas City to Clark Airport as early as 6:00 am to catch the flight for my worker who is going to Malaysia at 11:45 am flight.  Before i leave the house, me and my wife  had our morning prayer to do the rosary at 4:30 am, i asked Mama Mary to protect us on our way to Clark.

I drove at 120km/hr not thinking that my tire is already overrun and due for replacement.  I took the new highway that goes to clark but i miss the right turn to Clark South and i said oh..oh..no no.... I try to look for a place where we can turn around and i saw Porac exit which is about 8 km from clark and i take the Porac exit and then make a u-turn  to Clark South.  When i got the right road to clark airport i was relieved, but a few seconds i hear a sound blast and my car start running bad. I stopped at the corner with avery hot temperature and i found out that my front tire was blown up.  I said to my companions, no worry i have spare tire, but when i open the spare tire it was flat too.  I said in prayer, Lord help me. ...i need 911...in a few seconds, a passenger jeep came at the other side and the driver  looked at  me and make a u turn and stopped in front of me and offered  help.  He asked me to go with him and carry the spare flat tire to went out the clark to have it fixed.  He waited and drove me back to my car.

I thank God that He is always there to help us in times of needs.  Truly if you have relationship with God and you are aware that when you call 911 for help to God,  He is there right on time and place.

Whatever we had experienced today, don't forget to call God for help.. He is always willing to help and rescue us in times of needs.

GLORY TO GOD...

Every person who wins in his endeavor must be willing to cut all sources of retreat, only this you can be sure of maintaining that state of mind known as a burning desire to win, essential to success.

The Sacrifice of the Mass

By Vir Chicano
The Sacrifice of the Mass

357. What is the Mass?

The Mass is the sacrifice of the New Law in which Christ, through the ministry of the priest, offers Himself to God in an unbloody manner under the appearances of bread and wine.

For, from the rising of the sun even to the going down, my name is great among the Gentiles; and in every place there is sacrifice and there is offered to my name a clean oblation. (Malachi 1:11)

358. What is a sacrifice?

A sacrifice is the offering of a victim by a priest to God alone, and the destruction of it in some way to acknowledge that He is the Creator of all things.

359. Who is the principal priest in every Mass?

The principal priest in every Mass is Jesus Christ, who offers to His heavenly Father, through the ministry of His ordained priest, His body and blood which were sacrificed on the cross.

And having taken bread, he gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is being given for you; do this in remembrance of me." In like manner he took also the cup after the supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which shall be shed for you." (Luke 22:19-20)

360. Why is the Mass the same sacrifice as the sacrifice of the cross?

The Mass is the same sacrifice as the sacrifice of the cross because in the Mass the victim is the same, and the principal priest is the same, Jesus Christ.

361. What are the purposes for which the Mass is offered?

The purposes for which the Mass is offered are: first, to adore God as our Creator and Lord; second, to thank God for His many favors; third, to ask God to bestow His blessings on all men; fourth, to satisfy the justice of God for the sins committed against Him.

362. Is there any difference between the sacrifice of the cross and the Sacrifice of the Mass?

The manner in which the sacrifice is offered is different. On the cross Christ physically shed His blood and was physically slain, while in the Mass there is no physical shedding of blood nor physical death, because Christ can die no more; on the cross Christ gained merit and satisfied for us, while in the Mass He applies to us the merits and satisfaction of His death on the cross.

For we know that Christ, having risen from the dead, dies now no more, death shall no longer have dominion over him. (Romans 6:9)

363. How should we assist at Mass?

We should assist at Mass with reverence, attention, and devotion.

364. What is the best method of assisting at Mass?

The best method of assisting at Mass is to unite with the priest in offering the Holy Sacrifice, and to receive Holy Communion.

364a. How can we best unite with the priest in offering the Holy Sacrifice?

We can best unite with the priest in offering the Holy Sacrifice by joining in mind and heart with Christ, the principal Priest and Victim, by following the Mass in a missal, and by reciting or chanting the responses.

365. Who said the first Mass?

Our Divine Savior said the first Mass, at the Last Supper, the night before He died.

My thoughts on " Self Evaluation"

By Arman Seguis

Most of the time self-evaluation focuses attention on performance, causing me to ask the question, “How well am I doing?” at this or that.  Sometimes my judgment is too harsh.  I am critical because of some guilt in my life.  At other times I am too lenient, justifying my behaviors with all kinds of excuses.

Then there are the times when I judge my performance based on others around me. “Am I doing better than him?” Yet, it is not a good to “measure myself” by looking at others.

We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.

The Bible has a lot to say about our hearts and minds and how they determine the kind of persons are.

King David warned his son Solomon about “being” the kind of man who follows God completely. “As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever.” 1 Chronicles 28:9

So here I sit evaluating myself. How will I measure myself? I will focus attention on my whole heart. I’ll examine to see whether or not I am truly seeking God.  And, I’ll consider if I have a willing mind that chooses to listen to God’s word.

May God bless us all, and may we seek Him with our whole heart.

Our Ring Tones to God

By Arman Seguis

Ring tones, excerpts from favorite songs, animal sounds, or just “noises” are being used by owners of cell phones to identify the caller.  Someone wants to talk to us and before we hear the voice, we likely know who will be on the other end when we say “hello.”  We may have an “identifier” for mom, for dad, for spouse, for boss – and even one when the caller is a stranger.  We spend lots of time “downloading” those ring tones and specifying which one best “suits” the caller.

And how we look forward to a call from a very special caller!!  We will listen closely for that particular ring tone for we have chosen a sound that we won’t confuse with any other sounds.

Wonder what kind of sound we would use if we were setting up a “ring tone” for a call from our Heavenly Father. Of course, we know His call will not come in the way of a musical note or phrase, or in a small, quiet voice from somewhere in outer space.  His call will come from the truth of the scriptures.

How will we “identify” the One who is calling us?  We can know who the caller is because we read and study the scripture.  We test the message and we answer the call when we know it is for us.  John 10: 3-4 gives the example of the sheep knowing the voice of the Shepherd.  Then John 10:27 says “My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.”

We will know the identity of the caller and we will strive to live a life “… worthy of God, who calls you into His kingdom and glory” (1Thessalonians 2:12.) We will learn to Live a Life of Love.

WHY THIS GOD?

By Arman Seguis

Who do you trust in this life? To what kind of God would you give your devotion and loyalty?

The Hebrew Scriptures reveal a people who were fickle. The ancient Israelites promised themselves to the Lord their God, but then they went astray to other gods. They praised him, they won victories in his mighty Name, but then they forgot the Lord their God to indulge in the sinful ways of their neighbors.

Their God was a God of power and might, of goodness and steadfast love. And for every time the Israelites went astray, the ancient stories tell of people like Gideon or Rahab or Daniel, who put their trust in the God of Israel and inspired the whole nation to remember the covenant of love. The psalmists would sing of God’s wonderful acts throughout history, and the prophets would call the people back to the Lord.

And why would they return? Why, every time, did the Israelites decide to renew their vows to the Lord? What makes the Lord God of Israel different from those other gods they defiled themselves to worship?

Because however far the Israelites strayed, a day was coming when they would recognize God’s voice. They would hear the herald running over the hills shouting the good news of victory. They would collapse in joyous relief, because this sound meant the end of strife, the declaration of peace, and the securing of God’s reign in the land.

I will let Isaiah sing to you the reason, the difference:

Break forth, shout joyfully together,
You waste places of Jerusalem;
For the LORD has comforted His people,
He has redeemed Jerusalem.
The LORD has bared His holy arm
In the sight of all the nations,
That all the ends of the earth may see
The salvation of our God (Isaiah 52:9-10).

See the holy arm of the Lord, made bare to fight for you! God has flexed his righteous muscles in view of every threat that would dare to harm you. God is prepared to defend you, to fight for your honor, to win your salvation.

It is time to make yourself ready to renew the covenant of love with the one true God, the only God in whose name salvation can be found. It is time to purify yourself in preparation for service in God’s holy priesthood of believers. The good news has been declared on the hillside, the gospel shouted from the mountaintop.

Today is the day of salvation. Will you repent and believe the good news? Will you be washed for the forgiveness of your sins and be taught to follow everything the Lord has commanded?

This God has come to save you. Trust him, and do not be afraid. For the Lord is your strength and your song. This is the God to believe in for life.

FIX YOUR EYES TO JESUS....

By Arman Seguis
"Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning it's shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."  Hebrews 12:2

One day i was driving of the heavy traffic at edsa and i am trying to overtake each car ahead of me by changing lanes from one to another lane.  I pushed the horn loud to let others know that i am on their way. But to my dismayed the more i change the lane the more i struck at the heavy traffic.  I decided to stay on my own lane and relax and follow the flow of the traffic, at last i was able to reach the destination.

It's sounds familiar to our daily life, sometimes we are in hurry and rush all things for us to meet our needs.  We try to do as much as we can by doing unnecessary things and resulted to disappointments of not having received what we asked for.  We try to let other people know that we are at the right track and pretend that we are ok, but deep in our hearts it has so much pain and disappointments.

Why struggle when you can surrender to the Lord?  Relax and have peace with God and look to Jesus at all times. He is the author and perfecter of our faith and HE will lead us to our expectation in life.  We will surely find peace and rest at the arms of God,  who loves us and died for us.

Don't give up.... Fix your eyes on JESUS....

GOD BLESS US ALL.

Letting Go

By JMJ Family

I've a lot to learn from JM, my 5-yr old daughter.

We both ice-skated for the first time and yet she now skates like a pro, while I ... well ... I look like a combination of a 1-yr old baby walking for the first time and a baby duck trying to fly but couldn't.

Yup, that's how I look like on the rink each time.  I take careful, little steps with arms flailing like a wild duck, trying to maintain my balance, and always fearing for the worst ... fall down on my butt.

Last weekend, the 3 of us (hubby, daughter and me) went ice-skating again at The Pond in Bryant Park (in time for the park's annual tree lighting) and I couldn't help but be green with envy as my hubby and daughter glide gleefully on ice.  It wasn't fair!  We all started at the same time and I was logging behind.  What the heck's going on?

1.  Energy - She's 5 and I'm 36.  Meaning, I'm old.  I don't have the energy of a 5-yr old.  I couldn't bring myself to just skate to the max like she does.

2.  Guts - Kids are fearless.  They don't think about the dangers that's why they have so much fun doing stuffs.  For them, everything is play.  Me, I've got a lot of hangups. I might stumble, I might fall, I might fall on my face, I might fall on my butt, I might lose control, I might knock my head over, blah, blah, blah.

3.  "Deadma" attitude - "Deadma" means no reaction.  It's a local term we use for "I don't care", "so what?", "Who cares?".  My daughter falls down a million times on her butt but she just keeps going like nothing happened.  She just simply doesn't care.  I think she even enjoys falling.  Maybe.  Another hangup for me is I care a lot -- on how I'd get hurt, on how I look on the ice, or how embarrassing it would be to fall (esp. when there are spectators who just come to entertain themselves watching new ice-skaters. lol)

I knew I had to do something about it.  I couldn't just rely on my hubby to hold me each time I go skating, or  hold onto the rails for dear life (it gets crowded on the side as more new skaters join in on the adventure).  I needed to let go of my fears and worries.  And I needed to have a deadma attitude.  How else could I learn and enjoy, right?

So, I searched the mighty web for tips and video tutorials.  I tapped (EFT) away my worries and I talked to the ice like it was my best friend in the whole wide world.  (Hey, you're not the only one who thinks I might have gone crazy.  I think that myself, too.)  lol.

But it works, you know?

The other day, JM and I skated by ourselves and the whole time I was telling the ice "I love you" and "You and I are one" ... and I just let go. I was imagining the ice like clouds in the sky, soft as cotton candy, ready to fluff me when I fall.  I didn't care if I looked unsophisticated with my arms all over the place, looking like a running penguin.  I actually was making fun of myself telling people I was the student and JM was my teacher.  People loved seeing the 2 of us together ... with me shouting "JM, wait for Mommy!" most of the time.

I just let go.  And I never fell.  Not even once.  Yahoo!

So, I'm doing it again ... and again ... and again.  Thanks to my teacher, JM!  This is another check off my Bucket List.
